Reception

Welcome to Reception Class

Dear Parents/Carers

A warm welcome to all pupils joining the Reception class after the summer holidays!  I am very excited about teaching you all throughout the year.  In order to get the most out of their first year at school, I am writing to you to let you know of the learning opportunities that your child will be experiencing.

Themes:

The very early days in Reception is all about feeling happy and confident to come to school.  With lots of new routines we focus on encouraging the children to become independent in their new learning environment.

As we move through the term we will explore ourselves and our families, with a focus on ‘same’ and ‘different’ and celebrating everyone’s individuality.

After half term we will investigate journeys, Cornwall, minibeasts and look at a wide range of multicultural celebrations.

Reading Practice:

Being able to read confidently is a major factor in enjoying and achieving at school. It is absolutely vital that your child reads/shares books at home everyday in order to make the maximum progress possible at school!  Your child will be rewarded in class every time they do this at home.

Practice at Home:

Although homework is not an expectation of the Early Years Foundation Stage, it would benefit your child immensely if you can dedicate a regular proportion of time to supporting the learning of phonics (letter sounds). Your child will receive phonics sheets for new letter sounds at the end of each week.

Number:

Learning numbers and starting maths is an important part of the Reception Year. The Early Years Foundation Stage number target now goes up to 20. This includes skills like doubling and halving, one more/one less and simple addition and subtraction. You will receive a number pack with a selection of number games and dice to play with your child and encourage an enjoyment in numbers.

Extra-Curricular Clubs:

As this is your child’s first year at school they will only have access to a limited number of lunch-time and after-school clubs.  There will be a limited number of places, so children must sign up promptly.

PE:

Your child will need a suitable PE kit (ie: shorts, t-shirt, trainers) so they can safely take part in weekly physical exercise opportunities.  In Reception class PE is on a Tuesday afternoon.  Kit needs to be brought in on a Monday and left in school.

Routines and Procedures:

The school day starts at 8:55 am.  All children meet on the main playground and are brought into school by an adult.  Please say goodbye to your children on the playground and do not follow the line to the classroom. Children leave school at 3:15 pm and are let out of the Reception classroom when a named adult is present.

I’m sure you are aware of how precious your child’s education is. For this reason it is your responsibility to ensure that your child arrives at school on time everyday, in order for them to achieve their full potential.

Clothing:

It is important that children bring coats to school every day as they will still access the outdoor learning environment in all weathers.  Please ensure your child has suitable footwear, eg wellies for wet days.  Named wellies can be kept in school.
